I took the boys to my parents’ house on Monday afternoon to “help” my dad with Harvest! He only had a few acres left so we didn’t want to miss out!
“Hi Papa! We’re here! We’re waiting for you! Come get us! Hurry! ”
“He’s almost done filling the wagon, Maddox! It’s almost our turn! Here we come, Papa!”
“Hi mom! I’m in the big combine! Papa lets me drive! Look at me!”
“And, just when you thought it couldn’t get no hotter, I caught a glimpse of the Farmer’s Daughter….” (Seriously, don’t you love that song?)
As usual, we missed Papa Cecil…..it’s still hard knowing that Harvest goes on without him. But, I know he was with us on that combine ride in spirit.
Maddox and Joey each drove the combine a lot! Maddox was actually the better driver (good to know that I’m going to have to spend some extra time with Joey when he turns 14!). We saw bunnies and pheasants and the boys just loved watching the “teeth eat the corn.”
On the drive home, I loved watching all the farmers in the field…all the semis filled with corn, all the grain trucks on to their next field, all the co-ops at full speed. It’s a good feeling that farmers are working so hard so that we can have an abundant food supply. I don’t take that for granted and I know my boys won’t either when they grow up. We are so lucky in Iowa, and in our nation, to be blessed with rich soil, hard-working farmers, and the technology and machinery to make it a little bit easier. I am reminded of that every harvest.
