Our Mad Diggity Dawg turned 10 in August! We had a big weekend for him planned! He hit the Iowa Cubs game with his Uncle Tony and Aunt Kelly, he hit the Solheim Cup with Gma and Gpa Coppola and Tony and Kelly's family, and a family birthday party at our house, and a friend party! Whew! It was a lot of celebrating....but also a lot of family and friends and together time!
The Iowa Cubs game was a HUGE hit! Maddox loved it! They got to know a baseball player on the Colorado team and so they talked to him all game. The guy even gave Maddox his hitting gloves and his baseball since it was his birthday! SCORE! They stuck it out the whole game and saw the fireworks. It was really a fun treat!
The cousins swam ALL weekend long....they were in their swimsuits nearly all weekend! It was so fun watching them all!
On the day of his birthday, we celebrated a little before everyone went their separate ways! I had the girls, Kelly and Tony had the boys, and Joe and Joey had football! In the evening, we all grilled out and swam some more!
Joe and I kept his gifts pretty simple this year- a new baseball shirt, new hitting gloves and a Correa figurine!
On Sunday, we did his family birthday party.....he got so many great birthday gifts!
Some really great gifts....Clue, Bags, Headphones, Michigan football t-shirt and sweatpants, t-shirt, and an iPhone
And, for Maddox's bday party with his school friends, we swam, played basketball, and yard games. No presents...no favors...pizza and scotcharoos. Pretty easy group!
I love how Saylor marched herself right into the birthday party photo! All and all, it was a good birthday weekend.
On a sadder note, my dad didn't get the best news at Mayo. The cancer is back. More scans, a biopsy and radiation on the schedule now. The bad news is it's cancer. The good news is that we hope this eliminates the pain. There is hope, and that's a good thing. It's just been a long, daunting, sad journey that I'm anxious for it to be over. But, if I'm feeling like that, I know my dad is feeling it times ten. It's time to get the treatment plan on the road.....so, here we go.....

Joey's 10th Birthday Party
Sunday, July 12, 2015
Well, June sorta flew by us with so much baseball for both boys. So, I told Joey that we could consider a birthday party in July instead. So, we threw a very last minute "come if you can" birthday party for him on Wednesday night. We played basketball at our house, took the boys to the park and played wiffle ball and kick ball, then came back home for pizza, watermelon, and cookie bars, and then played in the driveway! The boys all had so much fun. They were such a nice, respectful group of boys, too! Joey was in his element....Joe and I have decided that he will definitely be the one to throw the party, and he has a friend named Anthony, who we think will shut down the party. When they are 16, I should probably question their nights out together....and, follow them around town.
But, in the meantime, here are some photos!
Joey at 10 Years Old looks like this:
* LOVES MUSIC. He is now starting to listen to his headphones in his bed, in the car, while playing Legos.
* He is a dancer. This kid has moves and is not afraid to show them. We went to Des Moines Golf for fireworks on the 4th of July, and he walked right out onto the dance floor and started dancing.
* He is really wanting to grow up lately. He asks things like "How long will it be until I drive?" and "Someday, will you let me ride my bike all by myself with a friend?" and "What age do you get a girlfriend?" and "When can I have a phone?" and "Mom, seriously, there are NO boys who are 10 who take naps." haha- that's when I tell him he needs to rest!
* He loves trying new things and isn't scared. For his birthday, he asked for lacrosse sticks. We watched a lacrosse game one day, and the next day he said to me "Mom, if I don't make the high school basketball team, I think I will just play lacrosse." Um, okay....
* He is motivated by competition mostly. He's not so much motivated by reward systems, toys, bribes, or even self-motivation. An example of this is when I took him to the gym to work on basketball and he was being lazy and not really putting forth much effort and I was getting extremely annoyed. A kid from St. Francis walked in to the gym and all of a sudden- BAM. He started playing hard. This kid was kind of challenging him on a few things, and Joey was not having it. It was like a switch went off in his head. Another example of this is when he played one on one at the Dowling basketball camp- he made it to the very end (semi-finals, I think) and had to play this kid who was much bigger than him. He lost in overtime but three times throughout the day, he would say "I should have done this move..." or "I know I could have beat him...". I could tell it bothered him all day.
* He smiles and laughs a lot. When he plays sports, he always looks genuinely happy to be out there. And, when he's with his friends, he's just relaxed and happy.
* Basketball still remains his favorite sport. However, he thoroughly enjoyed baseball this season playing catcher. Joe will say that usually their favorite sport is the sport they are playing at the time, and that's mostly true. But, he is most confident and most content playing basketball.
* He still loves building things, drawing, creating things out of paper, boxes, bricks, whatever he can find, Legos, etc. He is very good at independently coming up with something new to do.
* He loves playing with his dad. For the most part, he is a "coachable" kid. There are times when he resists it, but compared to some other kids we see, playing with his dad still remains the highlight of his day.
* He is great with little kids and babies. He will sit and play with Lia when everyone else is just running around her. He played with my cousin, Kason, and will do baby things and talk baby talk with them. He likes to hold babies, too. He's pretty nurturing like that.
* He doesn't give up on asking for something. He's relentless. If he wants anything at all, he will ask me every day three times a day.
* Reading is not his favorite thing to do. He likes to be read to - but doesn't enjoy independent reading.
Happy 10th Birthday to my oldest!!!

That's what TEN YEARS looks like. Sometimes, I can't comprehend what ten years has done to our family. It's hard to believe that ten years ago, we were sitting around changing diapers, feeding, and playing with ONE CHILD. We weren't going from baseball game to basketball game to football game. We were taking walks on summer nights, worrying about his feeding schedule, doing laundry for one tiny little baby, paying a babysitter for one, getting up 3-5 times EVERY SINGLE NIGHT FOR 18 MONTHS. Life was just...so much different ten years ago.
I get a little sentimental on Joey's birthday, him being the first and all. And, he kind of came into this world in a blur...his first year seems like I never really knew what hit me as a mother. He wasn't sleeping, I wasn't feeling good, Joe was studying for the bar exam...it just went by. And, now ten years has gone by. Sometimes I look at him and I want time to stand still because he's still innocent and "easy" at ten. Everyone who is anyone has told me that the problems get bigger as they get older....I kind of dread that time coming. Just this morning, he looked at me and said "Mom, I would never want anyone else as a mom but you." It was random (and surprising). I wonder how many more moments like that I will get from him.
And, yet, Joey was SO excited to be ten. Double digits. Kind of a big deal in this little boy's head. I thanked God so many times on Sunday for giving him to me, and allowing us both to make so many "first" mistakes with each other. He's the guinea pig....he's the oldest...it's not going to be easy on either of us. But, as sentimental as I get, I'm never sad. I've had ten years with Joey that some little boys don't get with their moms. More than anything, I'm just so thankful for us.
