It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

Thursday, August 27, 2009

So, while we were in Spirit Lake and my grandma and I were chatting with the rest of the family, she casually said to me, "I had my first peanut butter and jelly sandwich a couple of weeks ago." Surely, I had misheard her. Or, maybe she was showing the first signs of going senile. So, I turned and calmly asked, "What did you just say?" And, she repeated it. If ever there was an appropriate time for a "Whatchya talkin' bout' Willis?", it was now. So, I pumped her for more information- "What do you mean, you've never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Like you've never made one or you've never ate one or what's the story?" Nope, she's never made them, never ate one and she then said, "You know, it was pretty good. I liked it." And, then it gets better...she continues, "So I called Grace (her sister) and I said, 'Have you ever had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?' and Grace said, 'Nope, I don't believe I have. Is it good?'" Good Lord Almighty in Heaven.

Isn't PB&J like your forever friend? I mean- if you're poor, you eat PB&J. If there's absolutely nothing to eat in your fridge, you go to PB&J. You get home from the bar and want to snack, well, there's always PB&J. In the morning, you want some protein, grab a toasted PB&J. At lunch, you're out of deli meat, go for the PB&J. Your kids are hungry, now there's Smucker's pre-made crustless PB&Js (very good- but I'm ashamed I spent $4 on them). And, when you're preggers....oh, the joy of a PB&J. That probably was just me- when I was pregnant with Joey, I wanted a peanut butter and jelly for every meal. Had nothing to do with my 38.9 lbs. of weight gain, by the way.

The perfect PB&J is made like this: 2 pieces of WHITE Sara Lee Bread. One side spread with chunky Jiff Peanut Butter. Other side spread with Smucker's Strawberry Jam. Make sure to spread to the ends of the crust- don't leave any bread showing. Cut in half. Enjoy! Mmmm....Mmmmm.....Good.

It's cheap. It's easy. It's delicious. No cooking necessary. Only one utensil needed. How can you resist? Even this dancing banana loves it:
Poor Phyllis and Grace have been missing out on a good thing. So, help me spread the word (no pun intended) and bring back the PB&J. This economy could use the reminder.
