Happy First Birthday, Maddox Cecil!

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

This past weekend we made the trip to Jon and Jenny’s house. It was about a 3 hour drive. The boys didn’t handle it the best (there’s a surprise). Maddox whined a lot and it wasn’t nap time or night time so they just sat in the car and whined mostly! It was frustrating.

We got to Jenny and Jon’s and they have an adorable house. I love the outside and inside. I love their cabinets and color theme throughout the whole house. It’s done really nicely. They are finishing the basement so we slept down there. It was nice just to hang out and catch up. On Saturday morning, the boys went golfing and there’s when the trip started to go downhill for one member of our family: Joe! He had the worst round of his life and said it was similar to how an 8-year old would play. Joe’s a decent golfer so I knew it must have been bad. And, then to have it come when he’s playing for money with Jon Bishop made it even worse! But, I’m glad I could contribute to their groceries this month! Joe’s back was killing him and when he came home his dad and brother looked at it and said it was all messed up. Tony worked on it and the next morning he was sore from that, and this morning he was in even more pain and has headaches. Or, maybe he’s making all of this up so he had something to blame his poor golf on. Jenny and I went shopping in the afternoon at Legends Mall. It was this way-cool place with some outlets, some regular stores, a ton of restaurants, music, a fountain, bars and it’s right next to a Speedway and a AA baseball field. It would be totally fun to live by – it’s like a super-cooler Jordan Creek in Des Moines. The guys met us at 6 for supper at T.Rex Café – which turned out to be a total disaster. In short, we waited for nearly 2 hours for our table, Maddox almost fell on his head and was saved by Joe, Joey messed with a decoration hanging from the ceiling over someone else’s table and caused a scene, Macy pooped her pants and Jon and Jenny forgot to re-stock the diaper supply in their diaper bag, Jenny’s breastmilk was leaking out of her cooler (okay, I’m laughing about this now. Some lady came up to her and said, “Um, ma’am, your milk is coming out of your cooler” and Jenny replied, “Thank you for letting me know but that’s just the ice” and then turned to me and said, “I told her it was the ice because I didn’t want to be embarrassed but really it’s my breastmilk.” Nice!) and the kids were all having meltdowns because they hadn’t ate in 5 hours! Caitlin was probably the best behaved out of all of us and actually, Macy, for having been sitting in poop handled herself very well! My kids, as usual, were bouncing off the walls. So, you’d think this would lead them to sleep on the way home – nope! They were up the first two hours basically whining over nothing. Poor Joey kept asking when he could sleep in his own bed. We weren’t planning on leaving that night but the boys had slept poorly the night before and there wasn’t much difference between leaving late at night or early in the morning. I’m not sure why but we, as a family, do not travel well- and that includes Joe and I. Anyway, we had a great time at their house and I love now knowing what her house looks like. I like to be able to ‘picture’ people in their houses talking to me on the phone and now I can do that!

On Sunday, we did a lot of work around the house. We cleaned out the car, mowed the lawn, weed-eated (is that a word?), trimmed, re-planted plants, worked on the drainage/pipes on the outside of our house, cleaned the screened-in porch thoroughly, picked up dog poop and did all of that good stuff. It was a lot of work but we have Maddox’s birthday party coming up so I wanted to get some of it done now so we aren’t doing it all last minute. It felt good to get a lot of that done. We also got stuff moved back into the basement and did a little garage-cleaning. On Sunday night, we went over to Bobbi and Joe’s for steaks. Surprisingly, all of us were able to make it. Usually there’s one or two out of all of us there on Sunday nights but this night was great because we could all make it. It was great seeing Davis and Carter. All the boys were SO good – I was actually amazed at how good they all were. Of course, we had a couple of mishaps- Maddox was nearly drilled by a football thrown by Uncle Cary and after that scare, Tony tried to duplicate the move and nearly hit him with a football, as well. I was starting to think someone put a hit out on Maddox for some reason. We all played outside and Ali and Kelly took some photos which turned out great! After playtime in the yard, we went to Dairy Queen and then to Uncle Kyle’s new place. Uncle Kyle moved out of Joe and Bobbi’s last week. I could tell Bobbi was kind of taking it hard, unlike my own parents who practically called the movers themselves to get us out of their house. (To exemplify this, when we were home one weekend complaining about my parents’ guest room bed, mom said, “Do you want to know why we’re not getting a new bed down there? Because we don’t ever want you to come back and live with us!” Funny, mom. Feeling is mutual, lady.) Anyway, Joey still thinks he’ll find Uncle Kyle sleeping or playing video games when he goes over there so that’s kind of sad. But, we’re happy Uncle Kyle is moving on to waking other people up at 3 a.m. when he comes home instead of his parents. Kyle’s place was very nice and Joey was thrilled it had a park, sand and a pool nearby. Sunday night was just a really fun night! One thing I love about my in-laws (and my own parents) is that they totally act thrilled to see all of their grandchildren, even when I’m sure they’re exhausted from their own day. When the kids walk in, they are greeted with nothing but crazy-silly-loving happiness. I love that and I know it will help shape the type of men I want them to be someday.

Joey and Davis playing with their "men". Davis is completely 100% all-boy and I love that about him. He fights his men together just like Joey. Two peas in a pod.
Carter John and Maddox Cecil hanging out....I took them both on a stroller ride and Maddox heard someone behind him, turned around, saw Carter and was so excited. Like, "Hmmm, how did he get in here?" It was so cute. Here are the four original Coppola boys...Kyle, Joe, Cary and TonyAnd, here are their sons in the same order...Maddox & Joey, Carter and Davis. Any resemblence to their fathers? And, here's the crew wrestling with Gpa and Gma. Poor Gma...she thought she had a shot at getting a girl and we simply can't produce for her! I guess these boys will have to do!
Yesterday, my niece Grace started full-day kindergarten! I was anxious for her and prayed her first day would go smoothly. I also prayed for my sister! I can’t believe Grace is getting that old and it makes me quite sad. She made me an aunt for the very first time and I think you always have that special feeling with the first one for some reason. Plus, I’m her godmama so that makes her pretty darn special too. I was scared for her because if she was anything like her mom growing up, the night before school started was going to be a doozie. I remember my sister crying the nights leading up to the first day of school. I remember feeling so sorry for her and wondering if I should cry because she was crying. And, I remember one night going to get my dad because I couldn’t get her to stop crying and dad coming in and sitting on the bed with her. I’m not sure why she hated it so much! I think it was a little bit of not wanting to go to school and a lot of her being a baby (between the two of us, she was always the baby, don’t let her tell you differently). Anyway, it turns out Grace did great! Sometimes Grace can be shy which worries Heather but I told Heather I’d pay more attention to her self-esteem than her shyness and I think she has good self-esteem. I remember Oprah telling this story about how she still remembers one lady who told her she was pretty because she had never been told that before. I tell my nieces all the time how beautiful they are and how loved they are because as a girl, I just don’t think you can hear that enough. It's hard for me to believe that this little girl is now in kindergarten! Who does she think she is growing up without my permission?
Today is a special day as we’re calling it around here – Maddox’s birthday! He was born at 9:56 a.m. one year ago today! I can hardly believe it! It makes me a little sad and a lot happy. He woke up this morning and Joey and I went in and sang Happy Birthday to him. He went on a wagon ride with me this morning by himself, and then Joey joined us. Then, we went to Barnes and Noble and Joey picked him out a book for his birthday gift from him. This morning, Joey said, “My birthday is going to be in one week!” He keeps saying “My birthday is coming up!” and “I can’t wait to get a green scooter on my birthday!”

I’ll post more birthday photos after our little family celebration tonight! Happy Birthday to our Mad Dog!
