My Gma Bruggeman is a neat lady and I was reminded of that at Maddox's party. At the party, she started crying looking at Maddox’s photos and said they made her sad because time is going so fast. I caught her looking at them and crying 3 or 4 times, which made me sad. But, I love her because she says things like this:
“Holly, I’m going to walk around your house to see what is all new, okay? I’ll start with the upstairs.”
“Holly, I loved the way you used sand buckets to put potato chips in. How did you think of that? I liked that.”
“Holly, I’m so proud of you. This party makes me so proud of you.” (I’m not sure what I did that made her so proud, but I’m sure glad I did it. Maybe it was those buckets with the chips in them that made her beam with pride?)
When she saw me fixing plates for my two grandpas, she said, “Now, Holly, you don’t have to wait on those old men like that. Gpa can get his own plate!”
When she signed Maddox’s birthday scrapbook page, she wrote, “This is a great day!”
Or, the best line….when we’d leave Maddox, he would cry. Joe left him, walked away and said, “See? Now he’s crying! Ugh!” And, Gma said, “Oh, Joe, isn’t that wonderful that he loves you that much?”
Here's me with my two grandpas! I'm so lucky to have them both so close!
Gma notices the “little things” that others probably don’t notice. She’s told me she’s proud of me countless times, and I think that’s where my mom gets it from. She tells us that in cards- it’s always “We love you and are so proud of you.” Here’s a life lesson I’ve learned- for some reason, most people find it easier to say “I love you” but find it harder to say “I’m proud of you” or “I like this about you”. Somewhere along the way, as you grow up, it gets harder to tell people what specifically you admire about them, what they’re good at, why you are proud of them. I’m not sure why that is but it makes me more determined to tell the people I love what I love about them – because nothing can turn your day around more than an honest-to-goodness compliment (even if it is about a bucket of chips!) I’m going to work harder at that.
On Saturday, we took a walk to Bobbi and Joe’s, to once again calm Maddox. Then, we went home and Joe and Joey met Kelly, Tony, Bobbi, Joe, Cary, Ali and Jeno and Monica and kids at Raccoon River. Joe said they had a good time! I stayed home with Maddox and let him nap and got a few things done around the house! Then, we took the kids to Heather and Guthrey’s at 2 p.m. because we had a wedding at 3 p.m. Heather was gracious enough to step in when our babysitter cancelled last-minute! She had them until 7:30, when Bobbi and Joe picked them up. We had our good friends’ Wes and Amy’s wedding. It started at 3 so that always makes for a long day/night. But, the wedding was beautiful. She was such a classy, beautiful bride and he was beaming the entire time. You could clearly feel the love in that room and I loved that. They looked totally, completely, unconditionally in LOVE. Joe was Wes’ roommate for 2 years at Simpson and played basketball with him. We’ve gotten to know both of them through our church, as well, where they attend. Lifelong friends.

On Sunday, we had Grace’s birthday party. Heather had it all outside and it was great. We had brats and all the food was great! Jeff and I went together to get Grace some new school clothes. I LOVED shopping for her! Shopping for a girl is just so much different. I know she probably wanted toys but I couldn’t stop myself shopping for cute, stylish jeans, t-shirts, socks, I loved it all! The party was exhausting though as Maddox was at his worst- he just looked uncomfortable and unhappy. We were all home by 2 p.m. and we all took a nap together but woke up to a screaming Maddox. We tried for an hour or more to get him to calm down but nothing worked. Joe walked over to his parents with him and he was good on the walk, but Joe’s dad didn’t find an ear infection or anything. After that, we went and got groceries together and Maddox was great. Then, when we got home, we played outside and he was very happy but about 7 p.m., things turned worse again! We got Maddox down at 7:30 and he didn’t wake up until 7:45 this morning so he must have needed his sleep! What a stinker! He woke up incredibly happy though so I sure hope we’re feeling better today!

In this photo, Grace is holding a shirt Jeff and I got her...it says "Little Girl, Big Dreams" and I knew it was perfect for her.
Last night after we put Maddox to bed, we sat outside with Joey until 9:30. We colored on the sidewalk with chalk (Joe drew a Michigan helmet, I drew hearts and Joey drew Spiderman), we roasted marshmallows, we read magazines and we played with Joey's batcave. Every once in a while, I'd peek over my magazine, listen to Joey playing with his 'men' and smile at Joe. It was seriously a rough weekend with Maddox and that was the most peaceful we had been all weekend long. I loved it.
My friend, Sarah, got married in St. Lucia recently so that’s big news. She made a beautiful bride and we’re really happy for her and Jason - and Aliz. Their family is now 'complete'! Congrats, Sarah!

Here's a photo of my two Grandmas! How blessed we are!

Best be off. It's bedtime for Joey. Every night, when I put him to bed, this is what we say to each other:
Me: Snug as a bug in a rug!
Me: Don't let the bed bugs bite!
Joey: I will let them bite mom! They are biting me!
Me: See you in the funny papers!
Joey: Laughs hysterical
Me: My cup runneth over.
Joey: My cup runneth over.
Here's to a good nights' sleep for our little Maddox and Joey!
