Basketball Season Overview

Monday, April 18, 2016

We had a great basketball season in our house! Lots of practices, games, busy nights, busy weekends, out of town tournaments, and we managed to squeeze in a lot of fun and lots of improvement!

Joey's team went 36-6 over the season, and Maddox's team went 26-14. We had a lot of highs throughout the season - Joey hit a game-winning three pointer in a game, and he hit six three pointers in one game. Maddox had a couple of games with more than 20 points (which was a new accomplishment for him this year) and had a buzzer beater! The lows of the season were certainly around our losses, and a few poor performances obviously. But, there are good lessons to be had in those losses.....

Here are a few photos of the season:

One of the boys' favorite things is when they have "fans" come to the games. This year, they had so many fans including: gma and gpa remsburg, gma and gpa coppola, great aunt bobbye & uncle mike, great gma GG, Kyle, Ali, Cary, Kevin, Jeff, Aubree, Nick McMurray, and Maddox even had some classmates come see him play! They love playing in front of people who love him the most!

This is Joey and 3 of his friends- 2 of them play on other competitive teams that we have to play against, which isn't always fun. But, we look forward to the days when they will play together at Dowling.

And, this little thing sits through almost 75 games every season. Sometimes, it certainly is a struggle. But, I am so proud of her - it's a lot to ask of a 4 year old every single weekend, and a lot of weeknights. To be quite honest, it's a lot to ask of a 38-year old. She had some highs and lows of the season, as well. Her high was going out during half time and time outs and running around on the court, or taking a ball out. Lots of kids shoot during that and I tried encouraging that, but at least she got out there and ran around. The low of the season was when she spilled gatorade all over the court and we had to stop the game to clean it up. Good times had by all.
Overall, it was a great season. There are lots of times, where I hear people say that kids are too young to be playing this competitively. Or, I hear that kids are over-scheduled. Or, I hear that it's too much pressure on them. I get all that....but I have to say that there's nothing my boys would rather do than play. They are active, busy boys and if we didn't have this - we would be doing it at home. They are learning to win at life, and how to lose gracefully. They are learning about hard work and teamwork and dedication and making a commitment and sticking to it. The list could go on and on so I'll stop there.

As for the parents, to be honest, it's more work for us than it is them. The running around, locating the tenth lost water bottle, keeping the parents happy (since Joe coaches), keeping the little siblings occupied, making sure they eat healthy and get enough sleep, making sure that they know other things come before sports, teaching them to be humble in their wins and gracious in their losses, keeping track of practices, washing uniforms, tying shoes, etc....well, that list could go on and on too. But, the truth is - it's a lot of fun watching your kids play.  There were very few basketball games that would go by that I wouldn't thank God for the blessing of legs that can run, hands that can shoot, and hearts that use God-given talents. There are many stressful moments throughout youth sports (that's for another post), but when I would get stressed, that's what I would do - think about how good we have it - that our biggest concern is a lost water bottle....what a blessing!

Now, on to baseball! It never ends.....
