My cousin, Jenny, was able to find a couple days to sneak to Des Moines with her kids to catch up with all of us. It was a short visit-but a lot of fun. And, at this point, we decided we just have to squeeze in time when we can- it's not always perfect timing or enough time, but it is what it is. I'm just so thankful I have her. And, this year, I was more thankful for her - the summer days have gotten a little long, and I needed some girl/adult time in the worst way! So, her timing was perfect for me.
When she got here, we met up with one of her best friends, who has become a mutual friend of mine as well. We went out for Mexican, talked Big Brother strategy, and caught up on life. The kids all played with Joe and Joe was exhausted when we got home! On Tuesday, we took our kids, and Heather's kids to Adventureland. We had the BEST time. And, we laughed SO hard!! The kids deliberately disobeyed us a few times- and completely ran away from us twice! It involved a lot of chasing and yelling on our part, which only made us laugh harder. Jenny and I had just as much fun going down the water slides as the kids did. We seriously laughed all the way down the slides. And, each time, we would have these young lifeguards, and we would try to make awkward conversations with them and say things like "YOLO" and "Hang Ten!" and dumb stuff. The kids did everything together and were taking turns going down with a different cousin on the slides. And, they were just so cute to watch together. We were dumb and silly and awkward and it felt so good to not do anything but laugh that day. We had lemonades and funnel cakes and subs and a whole lot of fun!
On Wednesday, we went to Big Creek State Park for a picnic with mom, dad, Dawn and grandma. The weather wasn't the best and it wasn't the easiest to find, but it was fun to all be together. The kids had fun playing in the lake together too! You can see how much fun Saylor is having in this photo:
I was really sad to see Jenny and the kids go. I'd love to say that this would be an annual cousins outing, but I know that every year is different...but, we are again hoping for another fall cousins weekend with no dads or kids! Woo hoo!
